Wishful Wednesday: Cheap & Chic

Besides having the best name, Moschino’s Cheap & Chic line is consistently a lot of fun. Yesterday, I spent some quality time revisiting their 2010 Resort collection and making notes on looks that I would like to try. For example, everyone is still obsessed with “the blazer” but I really like the alternative idea of pairing a cropped jacket with a pair of trousers. I also thought the idea of recreating a more casual tuxedo look with an extra-long cardigan in place of a stiff jacket was pretty clever.

I was so invested in this collection that I made a list of the items that I would need to acquire (from a less expensive source!) to recreate my favorite looks from this collection. This activity also highlighted the dramatic lack of basics in my closet right now – not good!

  • Floral tights or leggings: Ones that maintain their color/pattern when stretched over actual human legs. This may need to be an investment as I am pretty suspicious of the quality of the pairs that I’ve seen thus far.
  • Black pencil skirt: Um, how is it that I DON’T already have one?? I mean, these are and have been wildly popular for ages.
  • Skinny black pants/trousers: Again, unclear on why I don’t already have a pair in my closet. Crucial for pulling off the tuxedo look and a basic that would get a ton of use.
  • Black pumps: Owning a pair would instantly give my outfits a boost. It’s also the most cost effective way of finishing off the wide variety of looks presented in this collection.

I loved how this collection could easily be mixed and matched to create some really playful yet appropriate looks for work. I recently started a new internship (one that’s been really great so far, much less taxing on my soul than my previous one) and the dress is business casual. The phrase “business casual” is entirely too vague and so it’s generally best to observe your more seasoned coworkers before making any assumptions – but I’m really looking forward to playing around with this concept.
