AWK: Urban Outfitters’ Phrenology Bust

phrenology bust urban outfittersHave you been in Urban Outfitters lately? Did you see the Phrenology busts, inspired bys scientist  L.N. Fowler, that supposedly double as jewelry stands? For those of you who didn’t study Psychology or Neuroscience, Phrenology is basically a pseudoscience which theorizes that personality traits can be determined/derived from the shape and size of the human skull. It’s been discredited (OBVIOUSLY) but was really popular in the 1800s. It also experienced a resurgence during the Nazi regime when ideas from Phrenology were combined with Craniology, another pseudoscience that measured cranial features as a means of classifying people accordint to intelligence, temprement, and most frequently race. The Nazis used these theories as a method of justifying their actions and feuling their human experiments…and that’s exactly why I was so weirded out when I saw these busts! Why would you want one of these in your home?
