05.Jun.2010 The Oxford Chronicles: Miharayasuhiro

I estimate that only seven minutes have passed since I sent my last burst of affection for Mihara Yasuhiro out into the universe. It’s kind of hilarious how often I think of him. Lately, my outfits have tended to be much more traditional/classic than I am used to (with a sprinkle of hot mess for good measure) and I find myself wondering – “What would Mihara Yasuhiro do to make this outfit just a little bit more unusal?” Here is my answer.
05.Mar.2010 Reader Love & Virgin Blak
Hey Jillian,
I had a dream that I got into a fist fight with The Little Prince and stole his coat. What do you think that means? Any and all theories are welcome. In exchange for an answer, I want to share a link with you. My boyfriend just turned me on to a line called Virgin Blak. I think you would really like their jackets. I describe it as a discounted threesome between Rick Owens, Ann Demeulemeester and your favorite Mihara Yasuhiro. Hot! The stuff is also reasonably priced. Let me know what you think. Keep up the great work with your blog.
Quirky girls unite!
xx
Kat
Well Kat, I’m going to take some time to ponder on your dream about The Little Prince. I won’t lie to you, it sounds a little disturbing. But, I definitely need to thank you and your BF for introducing me to Virgin Blak. I think you may have just solved all of my Spring jacket issues.

21.Feb.2010 Apocalypse Now: Miharayasuhiro F/W10

Miharayasuhiro F/W 2009 advertisement

In August, I posted about Mihara Yasuhiro and how much I love his design aesthetic; he makes clothing that any stylish adventurer would be proud to wear. If I had the body of a long&lean man and an impressive discretionary income, I would insist on buying a trench and boots from Miharayasuhiro every season. I would also become a jet pilot.
Yasuhiro is known for designing collections that are meant for the “post-apocalyptic urban nomad”and that idea definitely comes across in his F/W 2010 effort. Only it seems as though The Nomad now has business meetings to attend and possibly an after-work rock concert. Personally, I think that’s pretty awesome. I’d even like to believe that even after the apocalypse, and it’s coming ya’ll, there will still be plenty of ways to express our personal style through our clothing. Perhaps with a bit of sophistication too.
CUFFS & SHADES OF GRAY:

Putting aside the slimming effects of black, the color of choice for Yasuhiro’s Spring 2010 collection, gray is my favorite neutral. For whatever reason it just looks modern, and perhaps even a little futuristic, in a way that other shades don’t to me. I’m starting to have a preference for blue-grays, which look new for Fall 2010. A note on styling – I love how the pants were not uniformly rolled/cuffed and instead ranged from neat hems to pegged ankle cuffs and the more extreme tall cuff seen on the left. Each style has its own charm.
PRINTS & TEXTURE:

Lord knows that I love to see mixed prints. Yasuhiro has taken plaid and applied gradient techniques to make the print appear more graphic than lumberjack; this is nice to see because if the plaid trend is still going strong, we should at should at least be creative about it. I like that Yasuhiro is simultaneously playing with color, print, and texture in a way that he hasn’t for the the last couple of seasons.
DENIM:

I have vowed never to wear light wash denim on my lower half ever again. It’s a personal choice that I felt good about making until I remembered denim skirts. So I made an amendment about that. I’ll never wear light wash denim on my lower half, ever again, unless it’s skirt. But- Yasuhiro tempts me. Maybe in the post-apocalyptic age, I won’t mind if light wash denim makes my thighs look bigger, I’ll just be glad to have pants. Pants that remind me of Will Smith in Independence Day; you know… the scene where he’s walking through the desert, with his jumpsuit tied off around his waist, dragging an alien behind him in a parachute. Yeah…
Also, how cool does that denim shirt look tucked into those suit pants?
I’ll be trying that very soon.

24.Aug.2009 Mihara Yasuhiro
I was woken up rather abruptly at 3:30 this morning by a bunch of fighting junkyard cats. It was very upsetting and now I’m pretty much wide awake. I started thinking about my Rihanna blog post and how seemingly strange it was to include a link to a Miharayasuhiro collection in the same post. Strange, I guess, but obviously not impossible (see Kanye’s blog post about Yasuhiro..lolzzz). And being that it’s now 4 something in the morning, and I’m avoiding both sleep and thoughts pertaining to ‘real life’, I started doing a google search for Mihara Yasuhiro, the designer behind the line. My insomnia paid off! I came across a video of Yasuhiro, talking about his love of monsters! A man after my own heart! Of course, I had to share this strange little video gem with ya’ll and for good measure, here’s a quick look at his amazing Fall ‘09 collection:
I will now sleep for an hour and a half.
23.Aug.2009 Rethinking: Rihanna
For years, I’ve resisted joining the Cult of Rihanna. It wasn’t hate – I just didn’t find her to be all that compelling. I mean, I understand that she has really cool haircuts. I get that she loves fashion – studs, spikes, and heavy metals. I know that her style is more innovative than a lot of other celebrities that she is compared to but I also understand that she has a whole team of people working hard to maintain that image (like all celebs). For whatever reasons, Rihanna never clicked with me.
Which is why I find it so startling that a mediocre song (Jay-Z’s “Run This Town feat. Rihanna and Kanye West) could make me reconsider her appeal as a stylish figure. The video is pretty silly when you really think about it; the lyrics certainly don’t match the apocalyptic/”revolutionary” setting – but her hair does! Suddenly the spikes and chains, the leather trappings, and dark make-up seem to have artistic purpose and my interest is piqued. Lord knows I’m a sucker for creative imaginings of the apocalypse (ie – Miharayasuhiro, Demeulemeester, and of course Rick Owens).
This video gets some bonus points for featuring brown folks (surviving) in the apocalypse and Kanye’s dramatic overacting towards the end.
