Today, I take my last exam of the semester and officially usher in my summer vacation. Nothing says summer quite like plastic shoes. Each summer of my childhood, I begged my mother for a new pair of jelly sandals. I think my favorite pair was made of clear plastic with silver flecks in them. If it were socially acceptable, I would still wear those shoes every day and on every occasion. Kartell makes an adult version of my favorite childhood shoe. Seeing as how I don’t exactly have$130 to drop on a deliciously glorified pair of jellies, I’ve set my sights on some less expensive ways to recapture a bit of childhood this summer.

* Getting a NYC Library card. Now that classes are over, I can finally read for pleasure again. I’ve decided to ease my brain into summer with some childhood favorites like THE EGYPT GAME!

* Going to parks. What kid didn’t love playing in parks? I complain pretty frequently about the lack of greenery in New York but I’ve made a conscious decision to make good use of the city parks and botanical gardens.

Fashion is not my only love in life. I also truly enjoy all things silly, conspiracy theories [the stranger the better], and books with beautiful and or quirky illustrations.

Today, I went with Linde & Jo to Forbidden Planet, a comic store store near Union Square, and fortuitiously found “Bigfoot I Not Dead” within moments of being in the there. I’m pretty sure that Graham Roumieu, the creator, is my long lost pal.

It turns out he’s written a whole series of books on Bigfoot! There’s “In Me Own Words: The Autobiography of Bifgoot”, “Me Write Book: It Bigfoot Memoir” and lastly, “Bigfoot I Not Dead”- the funniest book that I’ve seen in years.

I would have bought it on the spot but I’m on shopping probation! So, Mom&Dad, if you’re reading this – my birthday is next month and I could use a good laugh! Also, books have educational value.

I am taking yet another break from studying for my Intro to the Fashion Industry midterm exam and thought I would use this opportunity to say thanks to Eli Whitney for inventing the cotton gin in 1792. Without you, man, we wouldn’t be able to call cotton the fabric (or should I say fiber) of our lives. And for those of you not currently enrolled in fashion school – that’s was a lame textiles joke. Cotton isn’t a fabric – it’s a fiber. Teehee Teehee.

I’ll refrain from launching into a rant about the political history of the cotton gin…

Within the first week, I had been schooled on how to properly wear knee high socks (think Clueless) and more importantly – how to wear high heels. You see, every week the entire school gathered for a Chapel and at each service there was a procession, during which you had to parade in and out past the entire school. It was like a weekly runway show.

After I graduated in from high school in ’04, I mostly put my heel wearing days behind me and was content to rotate between three pairs of ballet flats throughout college. I also considered it really impractical to wear heels in such snowy/inclement weather!

This doesn’t appear to be a problem for many of my classmates. I have never seen so many heels during snow storms and I’m not just talking about those strange ultra traction-ed high heeled boots – we’re talking about delicate investment heels- like Louboutins.

I admire their dedication to looking fly despite the foul weather but at a certain point, it just looks a little ridiculous!

Which leads me to the real point of this post. If you are going to teeter about precariously in your heels – you probably shouldn’t be wearing them! If you have fancy Louboutins but you have to clutch on to the wall for support when trying to get from point A to point B – get to Payless and buy yourself a pair of practice shoes but please, oh please, don’t make a spectacle out of yourself while wearing such a beautiful creation!

There are even videos on the internet that will help you learn to walk in heels! If you can drop a g on a pair of heels, I hope you can also afford to take a half an hour and learn to wear them properly.

Which is why I freaked the eff out when I saw this t-shirt:

I haven’t purchased a novelty tee in a long time and I’m pretty sure, knowing my luck, the minute I put it on, I’ll run into Mr. Franco and it will be epically awkward.

Not only will I turn into a hormonal, semi-crazed, sputtering mess, I’ll also be wearing a ridiculous t-shirt with his face on it. It’ll be O-Town all over again… Jk, jk, jk. But seriously, the man responsible for these videos has to have a decent sense of humor, right?

The panel discussion explore[d] the complexities and sustainability of fast life and fast fashion in the 21st century. In an effort to reinvigorate a tactile consumer experience, innovative designers are developing slow clothing built to last and ethically manufactured with a thoughtful approach to the creative process.

I am so angry with myself for forgetting about this free event and missing out on what I’m sure was a great discussion. Many of you know that I’m becoming increasingly obsessed with the idea of Green Fashion and while Green Fashion is not the same as Slow Fashion, they both seek to keep us fashionable while saving the earth.

1) Sylvester Stallone was my first celebrity crush because at the tender age of 7, I thought he was terribly handsome/brave in Cliffhanger. Thanks to the extraordinary Linde, I was able to see him, in person, on The View earlier this year. It was EPIC. Oddly enough, I have refused to see every other movie he has been in – with the exception of ANTZ.

2) I, not so secretly, wish that I could dress like D.W. on the PBS show, Arthur. I have been informed by several concerned parties that it is socially unacceptable to do so and they have asked for a pledge of abstinence. I have agreed to this only because I have yet to come across a pair of pink overalls in adult sizes. I have also been compared to Sister Bear on several other, unrelated, occasions. I was flattered.

3) I absolutely detest strawberries and just about all other red/pink fruits and will freak out if they come near me. ESPECIALLY strawberries. My family refuses to accommodate this phobia and I feel traumatized every time one of my parents offers me “a really juicy one”. If you force one on me, our friendship is over. I am not kidding.

4) I love children’s books and dedicated the first two weeks after graduating from college solely to re-reading all of my favorites from childhood. Among them- The Egypt Game , Alice in Wonderland & Through The Looking Glass. I recently happened upon another childhood favorite, Rascal, and I am rereading it as well as reigniting my childhood desire to have a raccoon for a pet. Wouldn’t that be swell??  Oh the mischief we could get into!

5) I sleep with at least 5 pillows on my bed. I’m not particularly sure why. They are a bit of a nuisance but I am very particular about there being an overabundance of pillows on my bed at all times. I’m not even sure where the pillows came from- I have no recollection of buying them.

6) Despite understanding the importance of proper fit, I hate to try clothes on in stores. I HATE IT. If you ever see me heading toward a dressing room, it’s because I’ve found something so incredible that I can’t wait to see myself in it. This has led to some unfortunate purchases and lots of returns.
