I really love these boat shoes from Sperry. At $58, they’re pretty decently priced but I can’t help but wonder what the DIY possibilities are here. After all, the shoes are just canvas. I recently bought a pair of white canvas shoes from Urban Outfitters for $5 and while I love the idea of white slip-ons, they’re highly impractical in a grimy city like NYC. I immediately thought they would be perfect for tie dying but I was a little concerned about the logistics since you know… you can’t actually twist and tie the shoes. Enter Martha Stewart and Proenza Schouler:


I can’t wait to try this method of “tie dying” on all kinds of things!

Always playful and never too serious, I am in love with MC&C’s take on the oxford. The real highlight of the design is obviously the floppy ribbons used as laces. If you don’t have the $300 to throw down on this particular pair, it would be easy enough to replace the laces on a pair of oxfords that you already own with ribbon. What a simple way to put new life into a pair of well loved shoes.

I have a new project that I’m so excited about thanks to Erica Domesek of P.S. – I Made This.Ya’ll know that I’ve been thinking about Where The Wild Things Are x Opening Ceremony and feeling rather sad for myself because I can’t afford any of the goodies. But thank goodness for those more creative and optimistic than me! P.S. – I Made This has a tutorial for a faux fur vest and it’s incredibly simple! Now it’s just a question of finding the right faux fur… Project underway!

I didn’t have to go out and buy a head scarf like I had talked about in a few of my posts this week. Last month, I read a really simple diy tutorial for the American Apparel circle scarf on Chic Inspector and decided to give it a try this afternoon. There was just no way in hell that I’m gonna pay $28 for a tube of fabric when I have tons of scraps laying around the house.

I found an old curtain that I had from my sophomore year of college and cut off the tabs and sewed the two ends together.

Dunzo.

It was just that simple but if you want more specifics check out Chic Inspector’s tutorial. I think my scarf turned out pretty well and I love that it’s kind of gauzy – it will look great with a black t-shirt dress (my favorite!).

I’m off to make one for Melanie now!
